A reading of a piece of creative non-fiction, from 2005 (I think): “Blood Sisters”

Excerpt

In truth, I don’t remember my mother pricking our thumbs (because, she says, we were too afraid to do it ourselves), or the act of us jamming our bleeding digits togther, letting our blood comingle, but I remember that we had heard the story of our own mothers taking a blood oath, and we insisted that we needed to do so as well. I’m told we both cried but I don’t think it was from physical pain, as much as the unconscious realization that we wouldn’t always be together.

Holidailies 2014 #09: Sunday Brunch – Tinsel

I also had childhood adventures with Merrell. He taught me how to bait a hook, one year, when he and my grandfather took my cousin and me fishing off the fisherman’s pier. He had a voice thick with fallen dreams and made for telling stories, and I’m sad that I never knew him as an adult, that he was, at the time he died, little more than a name to me. But I was named for him (he called from where he was AWOL in Canada to instruct my mother not to give me HIS name, as he felt it was cursed, so she used the first letter instead), and I suppose I’ve always felt it was a sort of bond between us. And he loved tinsel. He loved tinsel so much that when my mother and her siblings were growing up, putting the tinsel on the tree was his special job, just as in my house, it was mine.

20140921 – Sunday Brunch: Welcome Autumn

Excerpt from Today’s Show:

The summer wreath on my front door will be replaced by something involving dried leaves, multicolored corn, and brilliantly-colored sunflowers. The dining table will play host to a bowl of knotty, knobby gourds. I will change out the placemats, and gradually bring my autumn and Halloween pieces into the house – a pumpkin here, a votive holder shaped like a haunted forest there.
